Ever wonder which flowers are in season in spring? Fall? Whatever season you’re getting married in, it’s helpful to know exactly which blooms are available at that time. We’ve seen time and time again when a couple has their hearts set on peonies, but their wedding date is in the fall when these special stems aren’t available. That’s why we’ve rounded up our favorite seasonal flowers and polled some of our favorite local wedding florists on what other flowers and colors would best complement these seasonal blooms. Read on!
FALL FAVES: Queen Anne’s Lace

What other flowers does Queen Anne’s Lace pair well with?
Queen Anne’s Lace pairs well with delphinium, garden roses, rosehips, dahlias, butterfly ranunculus, goldenrod, blackberries, ferns, pods, grasses and almost any greenery.
What do you love about this bloom?
I love the way the flower heads are paradoxically both large and also light and “starry.” Each flower is actually a composite, so it’s essentially a botanical constellation, and I love that. I sometimes tuck them low in arrangements like filler or focal flowers, and sometimes float them high over top on their long thin stem, and either way they contribute a dappled texture to the whole piece that feels both artistically complex and fancy-free at the same time.
What month is this bloom easily accessible?
Queen Anne’s Lace is actually available year-round, but it’s often at its best in late summer and early fall, which are especially good times to find it in its transitional stage when the plant begins “going to seed,” in which the heads become more woody as they moving toward drying, and thus hold up better under heat and allow for a broader range of design possibilities.
What colors does this bloom come in?
Typically, fully developed fresh Queen Anne’s Lace is bone white or cream, with spring green maturing blooms. It also comes in varieties such as “green mist” which stays near neon green throughout its whole life cycle, as well as a moody “chocolate” variety in which the tips of each tiny petal range from dusty rose to a deep plum color, sometimes coming across as brown. Fully dried/preserved varieties are typically a straw-like golden brown color, and although I have yet to try this, would probably look incredible dyed black and styled with neutrals or against a pure white backdrop.

FALL FAVES: Dahlia

What other flowers do dahlias pair well with?
This bloom adds texture to arrangements with their many curled petals and they pair well with softer flowers such as ranunculus, garden roses and peonies. Dahlias are a larger bloom and also pair well with smaller flowers such as sweet pea, astilbe, ranunculus and berries.
What do you love about this bloom?
I love all of the colors they come in and their unique shape that adds dimension and texture to arrangements. I also like to use them as a pop of color with their bigger size. I love using dahlias in the fall for a burgundy/maroon color. There is no true burgundy rose, so dahlias are one of the best flowers to use for that color. Dahlias have a longer stem and are great for large installations and tall arrangements.
What month is this bloom easily accessible?
Summer and fall is when they’re best.
What colors does this bloom come in?
Dahlias come in almost all colors except blue: white, blush and dark pink, orange, coral, purple red, burgundy and yellow.

What other flowers do ranunculus pair well with?
Ranunculus pair nicely with just about any other flower. I love to use them with garden roses, roses, scabiosa and hellebores.
What do you love about this bloom?
I love the layers of petals the ranunculus has, as well as the stem. Sometimes we receive the curviest stems which make centerpieces look even more unique and the movement is always so lovely!
What month is this bloom easily accessible?
It is available year round, but you will get the best sized ranunculus at the end of winter, early spring. During its peak season, the ranunculus head can be as big as the palm of my hand.
What colors does this bloom come in?
A variety of colors – another reason why we love the ranunculus so much! It comes in white, pink, orange, coral, yellow, orange, plum, maroon, white to green, white to blush, red and magenta with a dark or yellow center.

What other flowers do peonies pair well with?
Peonies’ vibrant hues come in many colors which allows them to pair well with almost all spring blooms! I love to pair them with flowers with interesting curves and textures such as frittilaria, clematis and butterfly ranunculus.
What do you love about this bloom?
I love that no matter the variety, peonies are huge and they come in almost every color. Many varieties are fluffy throughout like little clouds, while tree peonies have smaller petal counts so they open up wide with colorful centers.
What month is this bloom easily accessible?
May and June are best!
What colors does this bloom come in?
Peonies come in various hues of white, cream, blush, pink, coral, yellow, red, burgundy and mauve.

What other flowers do foxgloves pair well with?
Its spike shape looks great with something round and fluffy. We like to pair it with ranunculus in early spring and garden roses later in the season.
What do you love about this bloom?
Foxglove adds a cottage garden feel and also height and structure to arrangements and bouquets. As a grower, I also love them because they attract many bees and hummingbirds to our garden! The flowers are poisonous, so take care around animals and children!
What month is this bloom easily accessible?
You can generally find foxglove available mid-March to June, but April and May are best for locally grown.
What colors does this bloom come in?
The most common colors are shades of purple, peach (pictured), and white. All of these varieties have sweet freckles inside the bells.

SUMMER SENSATIONS: Feverfew

What other flowers does feverfew pair well with?
This flower adds texture and whimsy to any arrangement! We love it paired with vibrant pink/coral blooms such as peonies, ranunculus, scabiosa and large bloom roses in the summer. Adding yellow blooms to bring out the cute yellow center of the feverfew is also beautiful. Here, we’ve used peonies, tulips and garden spray roses.
What do you love about this bloom?
This whimsical little flower is part of the daisy family. Its light, airy and adds the perfect playful touch to bouquets and arrangements. Not only can it be used in floral design, but it’s also a medicinal herb and is known to alleviate headaches! This fun bloom packs a punch of color and whimsy into a wide variety of summer color palettes.
What month is this bloom easily accessible?
Spring through summer, March to September.

What other flowers do roses pair well with?
They’re so versatile! We almost always use roses with other blooms because of the stability and longevity of the roses. Overall roses are the one flower that comes in more colors than any other flower, allowing us excellent blending abilities to please our brides.
What do you love about this bloom?
Roses are a flower that has been around forever but it still is so timeless and wonderful for weddings. No other flower gives us the spectrum of color to work with as the rose! They also come in varied textures so can be substituted for the peonies if need be in the garden rose varieties, which are more cabbage-textured in the petals.
What month is this bloom easily accessible?
Roses are abundant year round. The most sought after roses are the garden roses, which also carry a higher price, but we also love Juliet garden roses, which have a wonderful rounded peony look to them and are substituted for peonies when they are not in season.
What colors does this bloom come in?
The color selection for roses is nearly unlimited: pinks, corals, orange, red, yellow, white, champagne, blush, rust, two-tone, purple and lavender.
