What do you find most inspiring when it comes to wedding photographs?

Emotions. A lot of focus goes into the beauty and elegance of a wedding but when you look at a photo, for me, it means nothing if I don’t get an emotion from it. For this reason, posing the bride, or the groom, or the two as a couple can get very tricky. Many of them are feeling the pressure from the day, nervous, shy, awkward and then suddenly here’s my camera right up on their face (lol)! Having a photographer that can walk you out of those challenging emotions and remind you of the beauty and bliss of the day can be essential for getting those emotions to come through sometimes.

What do you think is the most important thing to look at when selecting a wedding photographer?

Naturally, we all want to look at pricing and rightly so. It’s important to plan for your future after the wedding and stay reasonably close to your budget. But it’s also important to understand the different styles of photography and realize what you’re most attracted to. Popular trends have been light and airy, desaturated sepia, dark and moody, but perhaps you like colorful images that aren’t light or dark or perhaps you fall somewhere close to one of those popular options and want someone that is flexible with the style. Of course, you can’t ask for those things if you don’t realize that’s what you are liking, so try to keep a close eye on the features of the photos you’re liking most and see if you can find a trend.

What photography trends are you loving in 2019?

I’m very much loving all the attention grooms are getting nowadays. I believe it started with cool socks and then it was trendy ties – like feather ties or wooden ones. But now we’re seeing grooms showing off their individual style from head-to-toe. From perfect hair, freshly trimmed beards, custom made jackets, unique boutonnieres, tie, socks and stylish shoes, grooms want to look just as good as the ladies! And why shouldn’t they?

Tell us about your favorite awe wedding moment captured.

I have an immense passion for the work that I do as a wedding photographer, and the beautiful images we capture have a lot to do with it. But at the end of the day, it’s really more about the special moments that we have for one day and will never get back – except in pictures. The responsibility isn’t taken lightly, so picking one favorite is tough. But one I remember vividly was in June of 2016 when Amber walked down the aisle… alone. This may be one of the most intense photos. I’ve taken photos of many brides walking down the aisle, but this time it was much different. With both Amber’s parents now passed, she chose to walk down the aisle by herself. No one can replace her mom and her dad, and so she took the steps alone. I knew this would take a lot of courage from her, and so I wanted to do my very best… for her. As the doors swung open, my heart stopped. I can’t imagine how she felt, but she was as grateful as I ever hoped for the image. And, of course, Claudia, my associate photographer, was at the other end to capture their faces as well.

What advice do you give to couples when deciding on their wedding photographer?

Social media has made it easy to narrow down your favorites. But when deciding on the ONE, always request to see full wedding galleries. Most couples skip this part, and it’s so essential. Seeing a full wedding gallery will give you realistic expectations of all you’ll be getting. It also may reveal photographers who edit a handful of images for marketing/social media that don’t truly reflect what they’re actually delivering to clients. Photographers shouldn’t hesitate to show you a full wedding gallery, so don’t hesitate to ask.
